POURQUOI FAUT-IL EXAMINER LE PROCESSUS DE LA TRADUCTION?

Abstract

Les chercheurs ont soutenu que la recherche en traduction peut être menée de plusieurs façons, bien qu'il soit d’usage de mettre l'accent sur l'examen des produits de traduction. L'observation des traducteurs au travail peut révéler de nombreux faits utiles qui permettront au chercheur de tirer des conclusions plus révélatrices sur certains indices de meilleure qualité. A la lumière de cela, cet article fait état d’une expérience d’observation, qui a été menée pour étudier sept étudiants universitaires de français. Ils ont reçu deux séries de tâches : lire un article de journal en français pour répondre à des questions de compréhension et pour le traduire en anglais. Un logiciel d’enregistrement d’écran a été utilisé pour surveiller leurs activités. Des données ont été obtenues quant au temps que chaque participant a consacré à ses diverses tâches. En outre, des renseignements ont été obtenus sur le comportement des utilisateurs en ce qui a trait à l'accès aux ressources externes, comme la recherche dans un dictionnaire. Parmi les résultats, il faut noter que peu importe l'instruction donnée avant le début des tâches expérimentales, les participants aborderont toujours les tâches à leur guise.

Scholars have argued that translation research can be conducted in several ways even though it is customary to concentrate on examining translation products. Observing translators at work has the potential to reveal several useful facts that will allow the researcher to arrive at more revealing conclusions about some of the factors that may be instrumental to producing a higher quality translation. In the light of this, this study reports on an observational experiment, which was carried out to observe seven university students of French, who were given two sets of tasks: reading a French newspaper article to answer some comprehension questions and translating into English. A screen recording software was used to monitor their activities. Data on the time that each of the participants spent in their various assigned tasks were obtained. Additionally, information on user behaviour regarding the use of external resources, such as dictionary lookup, was obtained. Prominent among the findings include that no matter the instruction given before the commencement of experimental tasks, participants will always be approaching the tasks in the manner they choose.
